Empowering Literacy Together
Transforming education in rural South Africa through innovative literacy programs.
Rally to Read: 27 years of Education Empowerment
Since its inception in 1998, the Rally to Read program has been a beacon of hope and progress in the field of education. Now in its 26th year, the program has made a significant impact: Impact: Nearly 1,000 schools, 16,000 teachers, and 700,000 learners have benefited from this initiative.
Investment: Over R120 million has been invested in literacy training, thanks to the generous support of approximately 160 private sector and individual sponsors.
Rally to Read focuses on improving literacy in under-sourced schools, addressing the significant literacy gap exacerbated by COVID-19 through comprehensive support and resources for teachers and learners.

School Management Team
Managing learner transition (grade 3 to 4)
The School Management Forums empower school managers with Rally to Read methodologies, crucial for implementing literacy advocacy and education activities. Managers receive training to ensure the program’s sustainability, equipping them with the tools and knowledge to support and sustain its initiatives effectively
Managing the transition is facilitated by our learner assistants, who collaborate closely with language teachers to address the diverse learning needs of learners. This involves providing varying levels of support tailored to each learner. One key aspect of this support is incorporating review activities from the Grade 3 curriculum at the beginning of the year to reinforce foundational skills
Digital Literacy Training
We provide essential digital literacy training to educators and students, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in a technology-driven world and improve learning outcomes.
Parental training
Our initiative fosters parental involvement and community support, enhancing literacy outcomes by engaging families in the educational process and promoting a culture of reading at home.
Rally to Read Day
Rally to Read Day is part of the broader Rally to Read initiative, which focuses on improving literacy, especially in disadvantaged rural schools. This initiative provides comprehensive support and resources for teachers and learners to address literacy gaps1.
The event typically includes activities such as:
- Book Donations: Distributing books to schools and students.
- Reading Sessions: Volunteers and authors read to students to foster a love for reading.
- Literacy Workshops: Training for teachers to enhance their literacy teaching skills.
It’s a wonderful way to engage communities in promoting literacy and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to develop strong reading skills.
